Lunch at our new favorite spot, Le Pain Quotidien

Our time in Munich is coming to a close– we leave Thursday afternoon (and arrive in Taipei Friday night).  Mostly, we’ve walked and walked and walked, as we often do on vacation; enjoying the sights and sounds of the city.  When we woke up this morning it was cold and snowing, which quickly turned to cold and raining.  After spending the morning at the BMW museum (Steve) and shopping (Laura), we met up for lunch at a small restaurant for hot asparagus soup and a cheese platter– perfect lunch on a cold and rainy day.

As I started going through our photo edits from each day I noticed something interesting, many of the buildings are quite colorful.  In the dead of winter when the trees are bare and the flowerpots are empty, it is nice to splashes of color.

Here’s a sample of the some of the color we’ve seen around Munich.

On December 24 at 2 pm ALL of the stores closed for Christmas, so we’ve spent a lot of time window shopping.  Most of the restaurants and cafes are open though.  Each day we head out around 10 am, walk a few miles around the Altstadt and then head into a small restaurant for lunch.  We stroll some more and then run into a cafe for a hot chocolate and then it’s nap time.  It is vacation after all.

A Christmas day service

After resting we head back out for our evening walk.  We do a little more window shopping in all of the closed stores and then head to dinner, usually in a place we had staked out earlier in the day.  That pretty much sums up our time in Munich so far.   Relaxed, low key and slow.

Walking along the cemetery in Berchtesgaden

Day two was mostly spent in Berchtesgaden roaming the streets, eating wonderful food and visiting a family grave site.  The beautiful weather of the previous day had left and we were stuck with overcast, rain filled skies.

Any guess as to what's in that cup?

Hellooooo giant pork knuckle, dumplings, gravy and sauerkraut. We're not on Taipei anymore.

The town was surprisingly empty for this time of year.
